Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power – Tate Modern until 22 October 2017

Benny Andrews Did the Bear Sit Under a Tree, 1969 (detail) Emanuel Collection © Estate of Benny Andrews/DACS, London/VAGA, NY

This brave and bold Exhibition focuses on the early 1960’s civil rights movement in America through to the later more militant Black Power rallying cry for African American equality.  The political turbulence and calls for action were reflected in the art: vibrant, provocative and angry; featuring many of the legendary black heroes of the time, in politics (Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and Angela Davis), music (John Coltrane) and sport (Jack Johnson, Muhammad Ali).
