The sale earlier this week of Hockney’s instantly recognisable Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures), 1972, establishes an auction record for a work by a living artist. It was painted when Hockney was 35 yrs. old over an intensive 2 week-period in France and completed the night before being shipped to New York for exhibition at the André Emmerich Gallery.
