Van Gogh and Britain – at Tate Britain: 27 March – 11 August 2019

van Gogh’s Farms near Auvers, 1890 (unfinished).  Oil paint on canvas.  502 x 1003 mm. Tate Collection

In his early 20’s van Gogh (1853 -1890) lived and worked for a brief period in London, Isleworth and Ramsgate. This exhibition focuses on how van Gogh was influenced by British art and culture and how he in turn came to influence a whole generation of British artists after his death, including Francis Bacon, David Bomberg and the young ‘Camden Town’ painters.

The exhibition will present the largest collection of van Gogh’s paintings to be seen in the UK for nearly a decade, including the National Gallery’s SunflowersShoesStarry Night on the RhôneL’Arlésienne, and two works he made while a patient at the Saint-Paul Asylum, At Eternity’s Gate and Prisoners Exercising.
