Lost treasure trove of Hokusai drawings!

Katsushika Hokusai (1829), Cats and hibiscus: a standoff between two cats, with hibiscus (fuyō) behind (detail)

The British Museum has acquired 103 “lost” Hokusai black-and-white drawings, created when Hokusai (1760-1849) was 70.  The drawings were intended as illustrations for a book called 万物絵本大全図 (Great Picture Book of Everything), but which was never published.

India, China and Korea“, Hokusai, 1829

These works are a major new re-discovery, expanding considerably our knowledge of the artist’s activities at a key period in his life and work … All 103 pieces are treated with the customary fantasy, invention and brush skill found in Hokusai’s late works and it is wonderful that they can finally be enjoyed by the many lovers of his art worldwide, (Tim Clark, honorary research fellow)
