Manga マンガ at the British Museum: 23 May – 26 August 2019
Monkey D. Luffy and other characters from One Piece (ワンピース), Eiichiro Oda’s epic Japanese manga series – running continuously since July 1997 and which, by May 2018, had sold over 440 million copies worldwide. It tells the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a boy whose body has become magically rubberised and who travels the world on a pirate ship in search of the priceless treasure called ONE PIECE. The series spans over 900 chapters and more than 90 tankōbon volumes.
The largest exhibition of manga ever to take place outside of Japan, the exhibition will “explore manga’s global appeal and cultural crossover, showcasing original Japanese manga and its influence across the globe, from anime to ‘cosplay’ dressing up“.

Manga (漫画 Manga) are graphic comics, read in Japan by people of all ages, covering a huge range of genres including action-adventure, sports and games, comedy, mystery, science fiction and fantasy. Typically printed in black-and-white and usually serialized in large manga magazines, often containing many stories, each presented in a single episode to be continued in the next issue. If the series is successful, collected chapters may be republished in tankōbon volumes.
