Armitage – London-based, Kenyan-born – explores the multi faceted contemporary culture of East Africa and the collision, often disturbing and brutal, between religion, folklore and modern life.

Painted on Ugandan lubugo bark cloth to give a rough, raw feel to the works, the large-scale colourful paintings, “blend dream-like figuration with compositional references to Titian, Gauguin and other masters of Western art history” (South London Gallery).
